What is Mental Health

Before anything else, let me break it down for you - Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act, influencing our ability to cope with stress, form meaningful relationships, and navigate life’s challenges. 

Just as physical health is crucial, nurturing our mental health is essential for a fulfilling and balanced life. 

Common Mental Health Conditions

1. Depression

This mental health condition is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities. It goes beyond occasional sadness or temporary emotional lows that everyone experiences in life. Depression affects how a person thinks, feels and behaves, often causing significant distress and impairing their ability to function in daily life. 

2. Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are usually excessive and persistent feelings of fear, worry, and apprehension. It goes beyond normal feelings of stress and can significantly impact a person’s decisions and perspective. This is one of the most common mental health conditions and can manifest in various forms. 

3. Bipolar Disorders

Also known as manic-depressive illness, Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by extreme shifts in mood, energy levels, and activity levels. Individuals with bipolar disorder experience alternating episodes of mania or hypomania and depression. These mood episodes can significantly impact their emotions, behaviors, and overall functioning. 

4. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders

Widely referred to as PTSD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition that can develop in individuals who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event. Characterized by a range of distressing symptoms, PTSD persists long after the traumatic experience has ended. This is mostly common with war veterans and

One of the most common mental health conditions are eating disorders which is usually characterized by persistent disturbances in eating behavior, which can have an impact on a person’s physical, psychological, and social health. Most common types are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder.


When it comes to mental health, it’s important to know and look out for various symptoms that may indicate a potential concern. While specific symptoms can vary depending on the specific mental health condition, here are some common signs to look out for: 

1.Persistent Sadness of Mood Changes

A feeling of prolonged feelings of sadness, hopelessness, irritability, or sudden and intense shifts in mood can be indicators of a mental health issue.

2. Changes in Sleep Patterns

Significant changes in sleep patterns, such as insomnia (difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep) or hypersomnia (excessive sleepiness or prolonged sleep), may be a sign of underlying mental health concerns. 

3. Changes in Appetite or Weight

Weight loss or gain due to noticeable changes in appetite can be associated  with conditions like depression or eating disorders. 

4. Loss of Interest or Enjoyment

A shift in interest in previously enjoyed activities or hobbies can be a symptom of various mental health conditions. 

5. Fatigue or Lack of Energy

Frequent feelings of tiredness, lack of energy, or a noticeable decrease in overall motivation can be signs of mental health issues.

6. Difficulty Concentrating or Making Decisions

Problems with concentration, memory, decision-making, or experiencing a foggy or overwhelmed mind can be indicative of mental health challenges.

7. Withdrawal from Social Activities

Isolating oneself from time to time is completely normal and healthy but if it’s persistent especially to someone who’s always been social can be a sign you need to look out for. Sudden shift and withdrawal from previously enjoyed social activities may be a sign someone is struggling with their mental health. 

8. Increased Sensitivity or Irritability

Heightened sensitivity to noise, light, or emotions, along with increased irritability, agitation, or outbursts of anger, may suggest an underlying mental health condition. 

9. Physical Complaints without Clear Causes

Unexplained physical symptoms like headaches, stomachaches, or chronic pain that persist despite medical evaluation can sometimes be associated with mental health concerns.

10. Thoughts of Self-Harm or Suicide

Persistent thoughts of self-harm, suicide, or talking about death should always be taken seriously and require immediate attention and support.

Ways to Deal With Mental Health Issues

Now that you’ve had an overview of mental health condition symptoms, you’re probably thinking, how can I deal with these symptoms?

You have to know that you can’t deal with the symptoms, you have to deal with the issue manifesting through the symptoms. 

Here are some general ways of coping and getting to know your issues so you know how to deal with them moving forward.

1. Seek Professional Help

It’s good that you’re learning about mental health issues on your own but it’s best to seek a mental health professional, such as a therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist so you can get a proper diagnosis, offer guidance, and develop a personalized treatment plan that may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.

2. Build a Support Network

There’s some level of comfort to know that you’re not going through this alone. Cultivate a support system of trusted friends, family members, or support groups who can provide understanding, empathy, and encouragement. Sharing your thoughts and feelings with others can help alleviate emotional burden. 

3. Practice Self-Awareness

The ability of recognizing and managing your own thoughts and emotions is called self-awareness. When we have a better grasp and understanding of our thoughts and emotions, this allows us to better regulate them which can help reduce anxiety, stress, and other negative emotions.

4. Prioritize Self-Care

It doesn’t have to be grandiose with candles and flowers in a tub. Maybe a simple hot shower can do the trick or hitting the gym to release some happy hormones, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities you enjoy. Whatever floats your boat and gives you a better mental disposition. 

5. Manage Stress

Find ways to avoid your triggers. If it can’t be avoided, you may have to consider taking yourself out of that space entirely. A lifestyle change may be what you need. When you’re feeling overwhelmed with tasks, try listing it down, figuring out your priorities, and practicing time management. If stress is already at hand, explore stress-reduction techniques like exercise, deep breathing exercises, or engaging in hobbies that calms you down. 

6. Maintain a Routine

Sometimes, in the chaos of our minds, we need some sort of structure, stability, and a sense of control and establishing a routine may be the answer to this. It can include regular sleep patterns, meal times, exercise, and activities that promote well-being. 

7. Limit Substance Use

Alcohol and drugs can give us a false sense of euphoria and may be short-term solutions to our emotional and mental distress. Excessive or harmful use of substances can worsen mental health symptoms and interfere with the effectiveness of any treatment. 


Everyone’s journey with mental health is unique, and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s important to find strategies that resonate with you and seek professional guidance for personalized care. 

Prioritizing mental health is vital for overall well-being and quality of life. For you to be able to lift your hands or be able to walk, your brain has to trigger it. If you’re not well in your mind, your body follows.
